Stress impacts lash retention
If your client comes back after two weeks with very sparse lash extensions, it’s easy to assume something went wrong with your glue or your application.
But here’s the truth:
👉 retention is not only about technique
Many lash artists struggle with lash retention issues and wonder why their lash extensions are not lasting as expected.
After more than 17 years as a lash technician, I can tell you this with confidence, there are factors you simply cannot control.
And one of the biggest ones? Stress.
🔺My experience as a lash technician🔻
Over the years, I’ve tested different adhesives, techniques, and even worked with multiple lash artists myself.
And despite doing everything “right,” I’ve personally never had perfect long-term retention.
That’s when I started questioning the common narrative that retention is always about the technician or the products.
Because it’s not.
🔺The moment that changed my perspective🔻
Early in my career, something made me seriously question everything I thought I knew about retention.
I had a client I had been seeing for years.
Over time, her retention started to change. Her lash extensions weren’t lasting like before.
So I kept asking her:
“Has anything changed?”
And for months, she kept saying no.
Until one day, she finally opened up and told me she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
She had been going through intense stress and anxiety, and during that time, her lash extensions simply wouldn’t last no matter what we tried.
That moment stayed with me.
Because I realized something important:
something had clearly changed… but it wasn’t the application, and it wasn’t the products.
It was what she was going through.
And not long after, I started noticing something in my own experience.
👇
I was running my business, handling multiple responsibilities, constantly under pressure… and my own retention had never been “perfect” either.
That’s when I started connecting the dots.
👉 There was something deeper going on.
And that’s when I truly understood how much stress can impact lash retention.
🔺How stress affects lash retention🔻
Natural lashes go through a growth cycle.
When stress levels are high, this cycle can speed up.
This is one of the most overlooked reasons why lash extensions don’t last as long as expected.
That means:
- natural lashes shed faster
- and when the natural lash falls, the extension goes with it
So even with perfect application, perfect isolation, and the right adhesive…
👉 retention can still be affected.
🔺A reality check for lash technicians🔻
Before blaming your glue, your technique, or thinking you need to switch products again…
Take a step back.
Ask yourself:
- Is your client going through stress?
- Are there hormonal changes?
- Is there medication involved?
- Does she naturally have a fast lash cycle?
Because sometimes, the issue is not in your hands.
And constantly changing your adhesive won’t fix a retention issue that comes from the client’s internal factors.
If you’re a client reading this
If you’ve tried different lash technicians and keep experiencing the same issue…
It may not be the technician.
It may be your body.
Understanding why your lash extensions are not lasting can save you frustration and help you set realistic expectations.
Conclusion
Great retention is not just about good products and proper technique.
It’s also about understanding the client as a whole.
The more you understand lash retention issues, the better you can educate, adapt, and build trust with your clients.
